Our reading:

Google Gemini's 350 million monthly active users are because Google started replacing Google Assistant with Gemini in early March.

Why

TechCrunch reported on April 23, 2025 that Gemini had 350 million monthly active users as of March 2025. It cited internal Google data shown in Google's antitrust case (e3). The same report said Gemini had 9 million daily active users in October 2024 and a reported 35 million in March 2025 (e3). In a post dated March 14, 2025, Google said "millions of people" had already switched from Google Assistant to Gemini (e1). Google said it would move more mobile users over the coming months (e2). TechCrunch also named Samsung phones, Google Workspace and Chrome as ways Google had put Gemini in front of users (e3). Together, these items show that the switch had started before March 14, 2025 and that other channels existed. They do not show what share of the 350 million came from the switch. The evidence therefore neither confirms nor rules out that the Assistant switch was the main cause of the figure.

Caveats

  • The cited evidence does not break down Gemini's monthly active users by channel, such as Assistant migration, Samsung, Workspace or direct app use.
  • The cited evidence gives no monthly user counts between October 2024 and March 2025, so it cannot confirm or rule out a jump in March.
  • Google's March 14, 2025 post says only "millions" for users who had already switched. The cited evidence does not show when the switch began.
  • The evidence does not say how Google counts Gemini monthly active users. TechCrunch notes that companies measure monthly active users slightly differently (e3).

Evidence (3 items)

  • Context only: Google,

Millions of people have already made the switch from Google Assistant to Gemini

Why it matters: Shows Assistant users were already moving to Gemini before mid-March 2025, but gives no share of the 350M MAU.

  • Context only: Google,

Over the coming months, we’re upgrading more users on mobile devices from Google Assistant to Gemini

Why it matters: The wider forced migration was announced for the months after mid-March. That suggests much of it came after the March MAU snapshot, but this does not measure its effect.

  • Context only: TechCrunch,

In the last year, Google has put Gemini in front of millions of users through AI integrations with Samsung phones, Google Workspace applications, and Chrome.

Why it matters: Names other distribution channels (Samsung, Workspace, Chrome) that may have driven growth, but gives no breakdown.

How we judged it

Kind of claim
Causal claim
Deadline
None given. We don’t add one.

Where we had to interpret

  • Read as: the 350M Gemini MAU figure (as of March 2025) was mainly caused by Google moving Assistant users to Gemini starting in early March 2025.
  • Testing this needs data showing how much of the MAU count, or its growth, came from Assistant-to-Gemini migration.

Right if: Google data or credible reporting attributes most of Gemini's MAU (or its jump to 350M) to users upgraded from Google Assistant around March 2025.

Wrong if: Data shows most of Gemini's growth to 350M came from other sources, or happened before the March 2025 Assistant migration began.

We wrote this test after the outcome was known.

What would settle it

Google disclosures, court exhibits or reporting that split Gemini's March 2025 monthly active users by acquisition channel. Monthly user counts for late 2024 and early 2025 would also help, if they show whether growth followed the start of the Assistant-to-Gemini switch.
