“OpenAI, as I've written before, is effectively the entire generative AI industry, with its nearest competitor being less than five percent of its 500 million weekly active users.”
Our reading, the sentence that was checked:
OpenAI is effectively the entire generative AI industry; its nearest competitor has under 5% of its weekly active users.

Our interpretation
- The concrete test is whether the largest competing general-purpose generative AI assistant had fewer than 25 million weekly active users worldwide.
- Gemini is an ordinary competitor within the stated industry-wide scope. Establishing that any competitor exceeded the ceiling is sufficient; identifying the largest is unnecessary.
- Use March 2025, the latest complete calendar month before publication, for this ongoing observation.
- The industry-dominance wording is assessed through its accompanying user-count assertion, not converted into a separate revenue or market-share claim.
- A daily active-user count can establish a mathematical lower bound on weekly active users for the same population and corresponding week; it is not treated as an exact weekly count.
Counts as supported if: Comparable worldwide weekly-user measurements show ChatGPT near 500 million and every competing assistant below 25 million during the target period.
Counts as contradicted if: At least one competing assistant has 25 million or more weekly active users during the target period, established directly or by a valid same-population lower bound.
Retrospective: these criteria were written after the outcome was public.
Current assessment

Outcome: Contradicted
The dated evidence goes against what the claim committed to, under the criteria frozen before grading.
Scored on a plain reading. The speaker named no measure for this claim, so it was judged on the reading an informed reader would take, stated below under our interpretation. Both reviews had to find that reading fair.

Rationale
On Zitron’s stated 500-million base, the ceiling is 25 million weekly users. Google’s March figure, reported from court documents, was already 35 million daily Gemini users. For the same population, a week includes its daily users, so this establishes a weekly lower bound above the ceiling. The numerical premise is contradicted; this does not independently measure OpenAI’s share of the whole industry.
Limitations
- Uses reputable reporting of company evidence presented in court because the primary exhibit was not obtained.
- The weekly figure is a lower bound, not a reported weekly total.
- The March figures became public after the post; this assesses historical truth, not what Zitron could have known then.
Evidence (1 item)
Goes against the claim: NPR via Georgia Public Broadcasting,
35 million active daily users
Why it matters here: The decisive quantity is a derived weekly-user lower bound: the same day’s active users must also be active in its containing week. The reported 35 million therefore exceeds the claimed 25-million ceiling without equating daily and weekly counts.

- Arithmetic
- For the same user population, WAU >= DAU. Thus Gemini WAU >= 35 million; 0.05 × 500 million = 25 million; 35/500 = 7%. (inputs: Google’s reported March 2025 worldwide Gemini daily active users: 35 million.; Claim’s ChatGPT weekly-user base: 500 million.; Claim’s competitor ceiling: less than 5%.; No additional rounding; retain the reported rounded user counts.)
