Why
Announcements before May 6, 2026 list OpenAI commitments of $250 billion to Microsoft and $138 billion to AWS [e4, e5]. Anthropic announced $30 billion to Microsoft and more than $100 billion to AWS [e6, e7]. On May 5, Reuters relayed a reported $200 billion Google commitment, stating that it “could not immediately verify the report” [e8]. Including that reported amount, these original commitment values total more than $718 billion [e4–e8]. They do not establish remaining balances or compare payments due with each lab's available resources [e4–e8]. Anthropic announced $30 billion in funding on February 12, 2026, but that disclosure does not settle its ability to meet the commitments [e9]. The evidence therefore leaves the assertion that both companies cannot afford their payments unresolved [e4–e9].
Caveats
- The reported Google amount lacks verification within the packet; Reuters's stated caveat was that it could not immediately verify the report.
- Rounded original commitment values do not establish remaining unpaid obligations as of May 6, 2026.
- Complete payment schedules, cancellation terms, cash resources and enforceable financing commitments are missing for both labs.

$250 billion
Why it matters: Supplies one announced commitment component. It does not establish the unpaid balance or OpenAI's ability to meet payments on the observation date.

Why it matters: The expansion is additional to the existing agreement. The resulting announced total is a multiyear purchase commitment, not an immediately payable bill.

Why it matters: Establishes the announced dollar component. The unpriced additional capacity is not assigned an invented dollar value.

Why it matters: Financing is relevant counterevidence to an inference based solely on current revenue. It is neither revenue nor proof that all future obligations are affordable.

How we judged it
- Kind of claim
- Observation
- Deadline
- None given. We don’t add one.
Where we had to interpret
- The dollar assertion concerns the aggregate announced purchase commitments to the three named suppliers, not recognized supplier revenue.
- Have committed does not necessarily mean the entire original contract value remains unpaid.
- Affordability means the ability to meet contractual payments when due using available resources and financing. It does not require holding the full lifetime contract value in cash immediately.
- Use the publication date as the stock-observation date because now refers to the then-existing collection of commitments.
- The aggregate combines company announcements with reported estimates, so estimate is the appropriate basis.
Right if: A deduplicated reconciliation establishes commitments above $718 billion as of publication, and payment schedules compared with each lab's resources establish that both cannot meet their obligations when due.
Wrong if: A complete reconciliation establishes commitments at or below the threshold, or payment schedules and available resources demonstrate that at least one lab can fund its obligations.
We wrote this test after the outcome was known.
What would settle it
A verified reconciliation of commitments as of May 6, 2026, separating original totals, remaining balances and optional capacity. Payment schedules matched to each lab's cash, operating receipts and enforceable financing would test whether both could not pay or either could fund its obligations.
