“Many companies are still in wait and see mode, trying the software but not putting into full-time production.”
Our reading, the sentence that was checked:

Our interpretation
- The surrounding discussion identifies the software as ChatGPT. Surveys covering all generative AI products are therefore contextual evidence.
- Many means a substantial group, not necessarily a majority. Production means regular operational use, rather than experimentation.
- For this undated current-state observation, use the latest completed quarter and the elapsed portion of the publication quarter: October 2023 through January 27, 2024.
Counts as supported if: Contemporaneous evidence identifies a substantial group of companies experimenting with ChatGPT without deploying it for regular operations.
Counts as contradicted if: Comparable evidence establishes that companies trying ChatGPT without regular operational deployment were rare.
Retrospective: these criteria were written after the outcome was public.
Current assessment
Was it true for the period described?
Outcome: Unresolved
The record was checked, and the evidence available by the cutoff does not settle it.
Scored on a plain reading. The speaker named no measure for this claim, so it was judged on the reading an informed reader would take, stated below under our interpretation. Both reviews had to find that reading fair.

Rationale
The surveys make Marcus’s description plausible for generative AI broadly. IBM found substantial exploration in November 2023. But these records do not establish how many companies were trying ChatGPT without using it operationally. Treating broader generative AI findings as direct ChatGPT evidence would change the scope of the claim.
Limitations
- A broader reading of the software would make the survey evidence more supportive.
- Many does not mean most, so existing production deployments do not themselves contradict the claim.
Evidence (2 items)
Context only: IBM; survey conducted by Morning Consult,
42% are exploring
Why it matters here: The survey documents widespread exploration alongside implementation. It neither isolates ChatGPT nor establishes that exploring companies had no production deployments.

- Company disclosure: the company describing itself, not an independent finding

Context only: O’Reilly,
18% already have applications in production.
Why it matters here: This provides a useful production comparison and shows that deployment was already occurring. September fieldwork falls outside the contract period, and the survey does not isolate ChatGPT.

What would settle it
A survey or documented set of company disclosures from the target period identifying substantial ChatGPT experimentation without regular operational deployment.
