Pundit ClaimsAI claims by Gary Marcus and Ed Zitron, with the evidence

“But I also refuse to believe that even half of the three million Blackwell GPUs that got shipped have actually been installed.”

Where Are All The Data Centers?, paragraph 208.

Our reading:

Fewer than half of the roughly three million Blackwell GPUs shipped have been installed.

We checked, and the evidence so far doesn’t settle it.

Judged on a plain reading. They named no measure, so we used the reading a typical informed reader would take. It is spelled out under “How we judged it”.

Evidence up to . Checked .

Why

The claim is that fewer than 1.5 million of the roughly 3 million Blackwell packages shipped through October 2025 had been installed by 2026-05-12. American Compute estimates that about 2.88 million of about 3.2 million shipped packages were deployed at end-2025 (e1). It says the deployment lag covers installation, power commissioning and network integration (e1). If accurate, that figure is above 1.5 million. But it is a model, not a measured count. It assumes earlier shipment cohorts "deployed fully" and a weighted staging share of about 10 percent (e2). Nothing else in the packet corroborates it. On 2025-05-28, NVIDIA said major hyperscalers were each "deploying" nearly 72,000 Blackwell GPUs a week (e4). That predates the target period, and the word may describe deliveries rather than installation. In November 2025, Microsoft's CEO said he may have chips in inventory that he cannot plug in (e3). He gave no number and no Blackwell share. No item gives a measured installed count to compare with 1.5 million.

Caveats

  • No item in the packet gives a measured or census-based count of installed Blackwell packages near 2026-05-12.
  • The main contrary estimate (e1) is a single model from a GPU-finance firm and rests on assumed staging lags, not observed installations.
  • e1 counts about 3.2 million packages shipped through end-2025, not the roughly 3 million shipped through October 2025 that the claim refers to.
  • e4 uses "deploying" in a way that does not clearly separate installation from delivery, and it predates the target period.
  • e3 confirms some uninstalled chips at Microsoft but gives no quantity and no Blackwell share.

Evidence (4 items)

  • Goes against the claim: American Compute (AC Research),

Of the 2.88 million deployed packages, about a third (0.98 million) run as standalone nodes or micro-clusters rather than in 256-plus GPU clusters.

Why it matters: Estimates about 2.88 million of 3.2 million Blackwell packages were deployed at end-2025, well above 1.5 million. But this is a model. The staging share is an assumption, not a measured count.

Earlier quarterly cohorts deployed fully. The weighted lag across the installed base is approximately 10 percent.

Why it matters: Shows the deployed figure in e1 rests on an assumption that earlier shipment cohorts 'deployed fully', not on an observed census. This weakens e1 as decisive evidence.

you may actually have a bunch of chips sitting in inventory that I can’t plug in. In fact, that is my problem today.

Why it matters: Nadella confirmed that some of Microsoft's GPUs were sitting uninstalled for lack of powered buildings. That fits part of the speaker's thesis, but it gives no count and no Blackwell share.

  • Context only: NVIDIA (FactSet CallStreet transcript),

On average, major hyperscalers are each deploying nearly 1,000 NVL72 racks or 72,000 Blackwell GPUs per week and are on track to further ramp output this quarter.

Why it matters: NVIDIA claimed a very high deployment rate per hyperscaler. If 'deploying' meant installing, it would imply well over 1.5 million installed within months. But the wording may describe deliveries, and the statement predates the target period.

Where we had to interpret

  • The 'three million' is the package count behind Jensen Huang's October 2025 'six million Blackwell GPUs' figure, which counted two dies per package. The post itself says so.
  • 'Installed' means physically racked and placed in a data center. Plain reading: not sitting in a warehouse, at a supplier, or in transit. It does not require the GPU to be in a large cluster or fully commissioned.
  • Installation adds up over time. A credible count of 1.5 million or more of these GPUs installed at any date from late October 2025 to the post date contradicts the claim. A credible count below 1.5 million at or near the post date supports it.
  • This is a claim about a stock at a point in time: cumulative installations as of publication. The target period runs from the date the 'three million shipped' figure was given (2025-10-28) to the post date. No quarter-end cutoff is imposed.

Right if: A credible count or estimate, ideally independent and based on measurement, showing that fewer than about 1.5 million of the roughly 3 million Blackwell packages shipped through October 2025 had been installed in data centers by 2026-05-12.

Wrong if: A credible count or estimate showing that 1.5 million or more of those Blackwell packages had been installed in data centers at any point between 2025-10-28 and 2026-05-12.

We wrote this test after the outcome was known.

What would settle it

A measured count of Blackwell packages physically installed in data centers as of about May 2026, compared with 1.5 million. Possible sources: hyperscaler or neocloud disclosures of installed Blackwell units, an independent facility-level census, or filings that separate uninstalled GPU inventory from equipment in service.
