Why
The claim says most AI data center compute revenue comes from OpenAI and Anthropic and depends on their ability to keep raising money. Testing it needs a sector-wide breakdown of AI compute revenue by customer for 2026-04-01 to 2026-07-22. The packet has none. A 24/7 Wall St. report from 2026-08-10 relays a Barclays estimate that the two companies account for 13% of AWS exposure in 2026 (e1). That estimate covers one provider and does not clearly define its base, so it does not test a sector-wide claim about AI compute revenue. The same report notes enterprise demand signals, such as Microsoft's $678 billion commercial backlog and over 30 million paid Copilot seats (e2). These do not measure the two labs' share. NVIDIA's guarantees of OpenAI-affiliate leases were entered in August 2026, after the post (e3). They say nothing about how compute was funded in the target period. No item measures how much of the two labs' compute payments relied on outside fundraising. 'Unsustainable' is a judgement and is not scored.
Caveats
- The analyst estimates in the packet come through press reports, cover single providers, and have unclear definitions.
- Parts of the 24/7 Wall St. report repeat the speaker's own arguments; those parts were not used as support.
- The NVIDIA guarantee evidence postdates the target period.
- The speaker named no period, so the evaluator chose the target period.
Evidence (3 items)
Context only: 24/7 Wall St.,
At AWS, Barclays puts exposure to those same two customers at 13% this year, rising to 18% next year.
Why it matters: A Barclays estimate puts OpenAI and Anthropic at only 13% of AWS exposure in 2026. That sits uneasily with a sector-wide 'vast majority', but it covers a single provider and its metric is not clearly defined.

Context only: 24/7 Wall St.,
Microsoft’s commercial RPO of $678 billion, up 84% year-over-year, and over 30 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats.
Why it matters: A counterpoint pointing to enterprise AI demand beyond the two labs. It does not measure their share of compute revenue.

Context only: FourWeekMBA (Business Engineer),
NVIDIA entered into the SB Energy guarantees in August 2026, capped at a total of $105 billion, on behalf of a customer, an affiliate of OpenAI Group PBC.
Why it matters: Shows that third-party credit support stands behind OpenAI's data center leases. This is context on how OpenAI's compute is financed, dated after the post.

Where we had to interpret
- Plain reading: well over half (call it 70% or more) of the revenue that AI data center operators (hyperscalers and neoclouds) earn from AI compute comes, directly or indirectly, from OpenAI and Anthropic. Both companies fund that spending by raising outside capital rather than from their own cash flow.
- 'Unsustainable' is a judgment and is not scored. 'Unprofitable' and reliance on outside fundraising are factual.
- Target period: he describes an ongoing state with no period named. The most recent period public evidence could cover before the 2026-07-22 post is used, from 2026-04-01 to the post date.
Right if: Credible sector-wide data or company disclosures show that OpenAI and Anthropic account for the large majority of AI data center compute revenue across hyperscalers and neoclouds, and that both rely on outside fundraising to pay for it.
Wrong if: Credible data show that OpenAI and Anthropic account for well under a majority of AI compute revenue across providers, or that their compute spending is mostly paid from operating cash flow.
We wrote this test after the outcome was known.
What would settle it
Provider disclosures or a credible independent estimate of OpenAI and Anthropic's combined share of AI compute revenue across major hyperscalers and neoclouds for mid-2026, plus data on how much of the two labs' compute spending in that period was paid for with outside capital.
