Pundit ClaimsAI claims by Gary Marcus and Ed Zitron, with the evidence

“I believe the vast majority of these data centers go unused and/or unfinished, and that most AI startups will die once the venture capital subsidies dry up.”

Revenge of The Business Idiot, paragraph 152.

Our reading:

Most AI startups will die once venture capital subsidies dry up.

What happened

Did the forecast come true?

We checked, and the evidence so far doesn’t settle it.

Judged on a plain reading. They named no measure, so we used the reading a typical informed reader would take. It is spelled out under “How we judged it”.

Why

Crunchbase reports continuing AI seed investment globally and $61 billion in North American AI-focused funding rounds in Q3 2026 [e1, e2]. These reports do not establish the sector-wide funding withdrawal needed to test the forecast [e1, e2]. They also provide no fixed-cohort survival results after such a withdrawal, so they neither establish nor refute the predicted majority failure [e1, e2].

Caveats

  • Aggregate investment does not show whether individual startups can obtain financing.
  • Both reports draw on Crunchbase data, which is subject to reporting lags.
  • The packet lacks a fixed publication-date startup cohort and comprehensive closure and survival records.
  • The forecast specifies neither a deadline nor how far or how long financing must fall to count as drying up.

Evidence (2 items)

  • Goes against the claim: Crunchbase News,

    continued appetite

Why it matters: The report records substantial global AI financing in the third quarter and continuing seed investment. This weighs against the required sector-wide funding withdrawal; it does not contradict the conditional failure prediction.

  • Goes against the claim: Crunchbase News,

$61 billion went to AI-focused rounds

Why it matters: The North American report independently details continuing AI financing within the same underlying dataset. A quarterly decline is not equivalent to venture financing drying up across the sector.

None given. We don’t add one.

Conditions

  • once venture capital subsidies dry up (their words)

Where we had to interpret

  • Treat this as conditional on a broad withdrawal of venture financing from AI startups, rather than one company's unsuccessful fundraising.
  • Interpret 'most' as more than half by company count.
  • Interpret 'die' as business closure or insolvency ending the operating business. An acquisition, IPO or valuation decline alone does not count.
  • Use the AI-startup population operating at publication, with survival after the funding withdrawal assessed consistently.
  • No deadline is supplied for either the funding withdrawal or subsequent failures.

Right if: After a documented sector-wide withdrawal of venture financing, more than half of the defined startup cohort permanently cease operating.

Wrong if: After that withdrawal, a definitive follow-up establishes that at least half of the cohort survived the funding transition as continuing businesses. Continuing funding before the antecedent is not a contradiction of the conditional forecast.

We wrote this test after the outcome was known.

What would settle it

Document a sector-wide withdrawal of venture financing and track a fixed cohort of AI startups operating on May 26, 2026. Permanent closure of more than half would support the forecast. A definitive follow-up establishing that at least half survived the funding transition would contradict it; survival over an arbitrary short interval would not suffice.
