Our reading:
For Anthropic customers burning millions of dollars' worth of tokens, nobody knows how much it's costing, but whatever it costs today isn't sustainable.

Why
Read plainly, the claim says Anthropic customers with token bills in the millions have unclear full costs, and their spending is not justified by returns. The period used is April 1 to May 26, 2026. Fortune (2026-05-26) reports that Uber used up its 2026 AI coding tools budget in four months, and that its COO said the link to useful features is 'not there yet' and the trade 'becomes harder to justify' (e1). The same report says Microsoft reportedly began cancelling most of its direct Claude Code licenses, moving engineers to GitHub Copilot CLI (e2). That shows a pullback but gives a tool switch, not cost, as the reason. 'Every story' is sweeping, and two examples cannot confirm it. 'Isn't sustainable' is also partly a forecast. A possible counterexample is 8x8, which estimates about $5 million a year in savings and says its annualized Claude bill is 'well below' that (e3). That report is dated 2026-06-16, after the period, the savings are self-reported, and the bill may not reach millions. The evidence does not settle the claim.
Caveats
- The packet does not collect all stories about Anthropic customers spending millions on tokens, so 'every story' cannot be tested.
- The evidence does not state whether Uber's or Microsoft's Claude spend reached millions of dollars.
- Apart from 8x8's self-reported estimate, the packet has no customer-level data comparing token costs with measured returns.
- The 8x8 report falls after the April 1 to May 26, 2026 period and may be below the millions threshold.
- 'Isn't sustainable' is partly a judgment about the future.
Evidence (3 items)
Supports the claim: Fortune,
the firm had already burnt through its entire 2026 AI coding tools budget in just four months
Why it matters: Uber, a heavy Claude Code user, did not keep its token spend in check and its COO says the spend is getting harder to justify. This fits the claim for one customer.

Supports the claim: Fortune (citing The Verge),
Microsoft earlier this month reportedly began canceling most of its direct Claude Code licenses
Why it matters: Another large Anthropic customer reportedly pulled back. This fits 'not sustainable', though the reason given is a switch to its own tool.

Goes against the claim: AITopics (summary of WIRED),
So far, 8x8's annualized bill for Claude is "well below" that figure
Why it matters: An Anthropic customer says it knows its Claude bill and that savings exceed it. But the bill may be below millions and the report is after the post, so it does not clearly fall within the claim's scope.

Conditions
- Anthropic's customers burning millions of dollars' worth of tokens (their words)
Where we had to interpret
- Plain reading: in public reports about Anthropic customers with token bills in the millions, total costs are unclear or poorly controlled, and current spending is not justified by its attributable benefits.
- 'Nobody knows how much it's costing' is read as not knowing the full or future cost in relation to output, not as lacking an invoice. The speaker himself cites a known Salesforce figure, so a literal reading would be unfair.
- 'Isn't sustainable' is read as spending that is not justified by measured returns and is being questioned or cut back.
- He named no period. I use reports around the post: April 1 to May 26, 2026.
Right if: Reports on Anthropic customers with token spend in the millions consistently describe unclear or runaway costs and spending that executives cannot justify or are pulling back.
Wrong if: A report on an Anthropic customer spending millions on tokens shows it knows its costs and that the spending is paying for itself (measured returns above cost).
We wrote this test after the outcome was known.
What would settle it
A clear report from the period on an Anthropic customer spending millions on tokens, showing known costs and measured returns above cost, would contradict the claim. Reports that such customers broadly could not track or justify their spend and cut or capped it would support it.
