Pundit ClaimsAI claims by Gary Marcus and Ed Zitron, with the evidence

“OpenAI and Anthropic are both separately load-bearing companies. If either or both of them die, 40% to 73% of all AI revenue and compute demand evaporates.”

The AI Demand Bubble, paragraph 145.

Our reading:

If OpenAI or Anthropic die, 40% to 73% of all AI revenue and compute demand will evaporate.

Judged on a plain reading. They named no measure, so we used the reading a typical informed reader would take. It is spelled out under “How we judged it”.

Evidence up to . Checked .

Why

In its October 26, 2026 filing, Anthropic said it had accessed capital and secured compute from investors and partners [e1]. On October 27, 2026, Oracle announced planned collaboration with OpenAI to train Oracle teams [e2]. Neither disclosure establishes economic failure or reports industry-wide revenue and compute-demand losses following such a failure [e1] [e2]. These items therefore leave the conditional forecast unresolved [e1] [e2].

Caveats

  • The packet does not establish economic failure of either lab or provide qualifying post-failure measurements.
  • Anthropic's reported access to financing and Oracle's planned collaboration do not prove sustained financial viability. Continued operation cannot contradict this conditional forecast.
  • The claim specifies no deadline, precise failure threshold, industry boundary, compute-demand measure, accounting basis, or post-failure measurement window.
  • The claim does not map the percentage endpoints to failure of one lab versus both.

Evidence (2 items)

  • Context only: Anthropic, PBC / U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission,

    access capital and secure compute

Why it matters: Anthropic describes continuing access to financing and compute in its filing. This weighs against assuming the failure antecedent, but does not independently establish long-term solvency.

    Oracle and OpenAI

Why it matters: Oracle describes an active commercial relationship with OpenAI. This does not establish economic failure, and collaboration alone cannot prove financial viability.

Conditions

  • if OpenAI or Anthropic or both die (their words)

Where we had to interpret

  • Die means economic failure as an operating business able to sustain its compute purchases. The context permits a shell entity or continued access to its models, so legal dissolution is not required.
  • An acquisition, product retirement, or reported accounting loss alone does not establish that antecedent.
  • The ordinary reading requires a 40%–73% decline in both industry AI revenue and compute demand after the failure.
  • All AI means industry-wide activity, not only the labs' own sales or selected hyperscaler contracts.
  • Demand that transfers to competitors has not evaporated. Revenue must be measured consistently without changing the treatment of transactions between suppliers and customers.
  • The source gives no exact mapping from one-lab versus two-lab failure to the percentage endpoints, and no dated measurement window.

Right if: After documented economic failure of either or both labs, comparable industry-wide measurements show an attributable 40%–73% loss of both AI revenue and compute demand after accounting for customer migration.

Wrong if: After the antecedent occurs, sufficiently complete and comparable measurements show that the predicted decline in revenue or compute demand falls outside the stated range. Different results for the two measures would require separate treatment.

We wrote this test after the outcome was known.

What would settle it

Document economic failure of either or both labs. Then obtain comparable industry-wide measurements showing whether that failure caused a 40%–73% decline in both AI revenue and compute demand. Account for customer migration, use consistent coverage and accounting, and separate the failure's effects from other changes.
