“Without OpenAI and Anthropic, it’s clear that the underlying businesses of the big three hyperscalers are deteriorating, and that their AI plays are a catastrophic failure, because the sheer amount of cash they’ve required to date (and the even greater pile of cash they’ll need in the months and years ahead) demands an outsized return for years to come.”
Our reading:
Without OpenAI and Anthropic, it is clear that the big three hyperscalers' underlying businesses are deteriorating and their AI plays are a catastrophic failure, because the cash these have required, and will require, demands an outsized return for years to come.

Why
For April–June 2026, Microsoft reported 14% year-over-year growth in Microsoft 365 Commercial cloud revenue [e1]. Amazon reported 16% growth in North America sales for the same quarter [e2]. Neither figure measures the remaining Azure or AWS business after excluding both labs [e1, e2]. For the twelve months ended June 30, 2026, Amazon reported a $7.6 billion free cash flow outflow [e3]. It attributed the decline primarily to increased property and equipment purchases, largely reflecting AI investment [e3]. This documents cash pressure, but does not establish quarterly AI investment returns excluding OpenAI and Anthropic [e3].
Caveats
- The packet lacks comparable cloud performance and AI investment returns excluding both labs across Amazon, Alphabet and Microsoft.
- No usable Alphabet results were obtained.
- The evidence does not consistently remove the labs' direct purchases, model resale, investment effects and attributable costs.
- Trailing-twelve-month cash flow does not establish quarterly investment returns or match capital costs to assets' service periods.
- The claim provides no numerical return benchmark or investment horizon for its severity judgment.

Context only: Microsoft,
revenue increased 14%.
Why it matters: Growth in this business weighs against an unrestricted claim that Microsoft's underlying businesses were deteriorating. It does not provide the required Azure or AI-return calculation excluding both labs.

Why it matters: Amazon reported growth in its North America segment, which cautions against extending the claim to all underlying businesses. This is a different segment from the cloud business addressed by the contract.

Why it matters: The preceding sentence attributes falling trailing-twelve-month free cash flow primarily to increased property and equipment purchases. That supports concern about investment pressure, but the period and metric do not establish quarterly returns excluding the labs.

Conditions

Where we had to interpret
- In the cloud-focused context, the plain reading is that the remaining cloud businesses are worsening after removing the two labs' contributions, and the remaining AI businesses have severely inadequate financial returns relative to their investment.
- I use April–June 2026, the latest reported quarter available before the August 4 post, as the target period. Earlier comparable periods are needed to measure deterioration.
- Removing the labs requires consistent treatment of direct compute purchases, model resale, investment gains, and attributable costs. Subtracting their revenue alone does not establish the counterfactual.
- The surrounding argument relies on analyst estimates, so the financial basis is estimate.
- 'Catastrophic failure' supplies no numerical return hurdle. I do not invent one or assume that multiyear infrastructure should recover its cost immediately.
Right if: Comparable financial evidence excluding the two labs shows worsening underlying cloud performance across the three providers and severely inadequate returns from their remaining AI investments.
Wrong if: Comparable evidence with the same exclusions shows healthy or improving underlying cloud performance and adequate AI investment returns. Evidence establishing only one component would address only that component.
We wrote this test after the outcome was known.
What would settle it
Comparable disclosures or transparent models for April–June 2026 and earlier periods across all three providers, consistently excluding both labs' contributions and attributable costs. These must show whether remaining cloud performance worsened and measure remaining AI returns with capital costs matched to service periods. Assessing the claimed severity also requires an explicit return benchmark and investment horizon.
