Pundit ClaimsAI claims by Gary Marcus and Ed Zitron, with the evidence

“While it's a useful efficiency tool, said efficiency is based off of a technology that is extremely expensive, and I believe that at some point AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI will have to increase prices — or begin to collapse under the weight of a technology that has no path to profitability.”

Pop Culture, paragraph 63. The full statement is at the source.

Our reading, the sentence that was checked:

At some point AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic will have to raise prices or begin to collapse, because the technology has no path to profitability.

From the speaker

  • at some point
  • AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI
  • will have to increase prices
  • or begin to collapse
  • technology that has no path to profitability

Our interpretation

  • Read as a forecast with no deadline and two alternatives: cost pressure will force AI firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic to raise prices broadly, or they will begin to collapse financially.
  • Plain reading of 'have to increase prices': a general, cost-driven rise in what customers pay for comparable service. Pricier new premium tiers, or a pricier new model justified by better capability, are weaker evidence.
  • 'Begin to collapse' means clear signs of financial failure, such as inability to fund operations, insolvency, or a forced sale.

Counts as supported if: OpenAI or Anthropic broadly raise prices for comparable service in response to costs, or show clear signs of financial collapse.

Counts as contradicted if: Hard to contradict without a deadline. It would be strong counterevidence if the firms became sustainably profitable while broad prices for comparable service kept falling.

Retrospective: these criteria were written after the outcome was public.

Scored on a plain reading. The speaker named no measure for this claim, so it was judged on the reading an informed reader would take, stated below under our interpretation. Both reviews had to find that reading fair.

Rationale

In July 2024 Zitron forecast that, at some point, firms like OpenAI and Anthropic would have to raise prices or begin to collapse. TechCrunch reported in November 2024 that Claude 3.5 Haiku cost four times as much as Claude 3 Haiku (e1). Anthropic said the higher price reflected the model's 'increase in intelligence', not costs. A secondary write-up describes a change from 15 June 2026 (e2). Programmatic use of Claude through a subscription moved to a credit pool billed at API rates. Anthropic's stated reason was that third-party agent tools were driving usage that threw off its flat-rate pricing. The same write-up says interactive use and direct API use were unchanged, and that Anthropic's API token rates had not moved (e3). So the evidence shows a price rise tied to capability and a narrow repricing, not a broad price rise for comparable service. The evidence does not cover OpenAI's prices or either firm's finances. Neither early-resolution rule is met, and with no deadline the claim stays open.

Limitations

  • The June 2026 Anthropic change is documented only through a secondary write-up, not Anthropic's own announcement.
  • No evidence on OpenAI's pricing was cited.
  • No evidence on either firm's profitability or financial condition was cited.
  • 'Have to increase prices' and 'begin to collapse' are not defined, and 'companies like Anthropic and OpenAI' leaves the set of firms open.

Evidence (3 items)

  • Context only: TechCrunch,

Pricing for Claude 3.5 Haiku starts at $1 per million input tokens (~750,000 words) and $5 per million output tokens. That’s versus 25 cents per million input tokens and $1.25 per million output tokens for Claude 3 Haiku — a 4x hike.

Why it matters here: An Anthropic price rise did happen. But Anthropic tied it to the new model's greater intelligence, not to costs, so it only partly matches a cost-forced price increase.

Anthropic's stated reason: third-party agent tools were driving programmatic burn that "throw off our flat-rate pricing model."

Why it matters here: From June 2026, programmatic use on Claude subscriptions was metered at API rates, a cost-driven repricing for one group of users. This partly fits the forecast.

  • Context only: Generative Labs,

API token rates have not moved (and have been moving down separately, per the prior post ). The June 15 split restructures subscription plans only.

Why it matters here: Shows the June 2026 change was narrow: API prices were unchanged or falling. That cuts against reading it as the broad, forced price rise the forecast implies.

What would settle it

Support would need a documented broad, cost-driven price increase by OpenAI or Anthropic for comparable service. Clear signs of financial collapse at either firm, such as inability to fund operations, insolvency or a forced sale, would also support it. Contradiction would need sustained profitability at stable or falling prices.
