Pundit ClaimsAI claims by Gary Marcus and Ed Zitron, with the evidence

“This stuff — websites that state falsehoods because an AI hallucinated, or fake pictures of mushrooms and dogs that now dominate Google Images — is not going away.”

Never Forgive Them, paragraph 98.

Our reading:

AI-generated falsehoods and fake images polluting the web will not go away.

Assessment: Unresolved

What happened

Did the forecast come true?

Outcome: Unresolved

We checked, and the evidence so far doesn’t settle it.

Judged on a plain reading. They named no measure, so we used the reading a typical informed reader would take. It is spelled out under “How we judged it”.

Evidence up to . Checked .

Why

This forecast has no deadline. It says AI-made false websites and fake images are 'with us forever'. Evidence up to the evaluation date fits it. NewsGuard's count of AI content-farm sites rose from 966 in mid-2024 to 3,749 by June 2026. That shows growth, not removal. But persistence so far cannot confirm a 'forever' forecast. No event has shown such content was largely eliminated, which would have contradicted it early. So it stays open.

Caveats

  • NewsGuard counts sites it finds, not all AI content.
  • No measurement of fake AI images in Google Images was found.

Evidence (2 items)

  • Supports the claim: NewsGuard,

To date, NewsGuard’s team has identified 3,749 AI Content Farm news and information websites spanning 16 languages

Why it matters: By June 2026 the count of AI content-farm sites had grown to 3,749. This is consistent with the forecast that such content is not going away, but it cannot confirm 'forever'.

  • Context only: The Decoder,

NewsGuard has uncovered a global network of 966 news websites that publish mostly AI-generated content in 16 different languages.

Why it matters: The mid-2024 baseline. Against it, the 2026 count shows growth, not removal.

Where we had to interpret

  • Forecast with no deadline: AI-generated false websites and fake AI images on the web, including in Google Images, will persist and will not be largely removed.
  • Because 'forever' has no end date, the forecast cannot be confirmed for good on any date. It could be contradicted early if this content were shown to be largely eliminated.

Right if: Over time, credible measurements keep showing AI-hallucinated falsehood sites and fake AI images remaining widespread on the web and in image search.

Wrong if: Credible measurement shows AI-generated false websites and fake AI images have been largely removed from the web and Google Images, for example through effective detection and filtering.

We wrote this test after the outcome was known.

What would settle it

A credible measurement showing that AI-generated false sites and fake AI images had been largely removed from the web and Google Images would contradict it. Nothing can fully confirm 'forever'.
