Pundit ClaimsAI claims by Gary Marcus and Ed Zitron, with the evidence

“We still, to this day, have no real clear understanding of whether it’s profitable to run any kind of AI service or even to rent out AI GPUs, but because so much money has been invested, everybody assumes it’s the right idea to do so.”

Why

The claim comes from a post published 2026-09-01. It says there is no clear understanding of whether running AI services or renting out AI GPUs is profitable. It sets no conditions. 'Real clear understanding' has no stated standard. 'Any kind of AI service' covers an undefined range of businesses. The claim also does not say which profit measure counts. On 2026-08-11, AP reported that CoreWeave, a cloud computing company, had a loss of $626 million in its second quarter of 2026 (e1). On 2026-09-13, Reuters relayed a Financial Times report, based on unnamed people, that Anthropic had told shareholders its adjusted operating income will be positive for a second straight quarter. Reuters said it could not verify the report (e2). These items describe results on different measures. They cannot show whether a 'clear' understanding of profitability exists, so the claim cannot be checked as written.

Caveats

  • The Anthropic figure is a second-hand press report that Reuters could not verify. It is unaudited, non-GAAP and forward-looking.
  • The CoreWeave item covers one company in one quarter and reports only its net loss. Its adjusted operating figures are not in the cited evidence.
  • The evidence does not cover the wider range of AI service businesses the claim refers to.

Where we had to interpret

  • The claim is about the state of collective knowledge ('we have no real clear understanding'), not a measurable quantity.
  • No threshold separates a 'clear' understanding from an unclear one, and 'any kind of AI service' covers a very wide, undefined set of businesses.
  • The evidence available fits either reading, depending on which profit measure one accepts. Anthropic reported an adjusted operating profit to investors. CoreWeave, the largest public GPU renter, reports GAAP losses but positive adjusted operating income. Deciding whether this amounts to 'clear understanding' is a judgment, not a check.
