Why

The sentence is a hedged impression ('seemingly every software product') joined to a value judgment ('without explaining how it'll make anything better'). He set no threshold and named no measure. 'Seemingly' marks it as an impression, not a count of products. One product he names, Zoom, did add AI before the post. On 2023-09-05, Zoom announced its generative AI assistant, AI Companion, for paid accounts across its platform. The release says Zoom first offered generative AI features in early June 2023 (e1). In the same release, Zoom said the assistant would 'help users improve productivity and work together more effectively' (e1). That one example does not test his main point, which is that the benefits went unexplained. Whether a general statement like Zoom's counts as explaining the benefit is a matter of opinion. Grading the claim either way would require a standard he did not set.

Caveats

  • Only one product, Zoom, was checked, and only as context. The evidence does not show how many software products were adding AI during the period.
  • The evidence does not show how Zoom or any other vendor described AI benefits beyond the one press release.
  • No objective standard exists for whether a vendor adequately explained an AI feature's benefit.

How we judged it

None given. We don’t add one.

Conditions

  • seemingly (their words)
  • every software product (their words)

Where we had to interpret

  • 'Seemingly' marks this as an impression, not a firm claim about the software market.
  • 'Without explaining how it'll make anything better' is a judgment about whether vendors' explanations were good enough. A reader can agree or disagree, but no record can show it true or false.
  • The one checkable part is that many software products, including ones he names such as Zoom, were adding AI around the post date. That fact does not test his actual point, which is that the additions lacked a clear benefit.

We don’t grade claims like this. We only check the quote and who said it.
