Pundit ClaimsAI claims by Gary Marcus and Ed Zitron, with the evidence

“It’s also unclear whether the customer base for AI compute exists outside of OpenAI and Anthropic, whose demand accounts for 50% of AI data centers under construction, creating a massive systemic weakness if either of them lacks the money to pay.”

AI's Economics Don't Make Sense, paragraph 95. The full statement is at the source.

Our reading, the sentence that was checked:

OpenAI and Anthropic account for 50% of AI data centers under construction, a systemic weakness if either cannot pay, and demand outside them is unclear.

Conditions

  • if OpenAI or Anthropic lacks money to pay (qualifier, stated by the speaker)

From the speaker

  • OpenAI and Anthropic
  • 50% of AI data centers under construction
  • unclear whether the customer base for AI compute exists outside
  • a massive systemic weakness if either of them lacks the money to pay

Our interpretation

  • The surrounding GW discussion makes capacity share the ordinary reading of 50%, rather than a count of buildings.
  • I use the latest prepublication monthly snapshot: April 2026 through April 28. The post does not identify a measurement date.
  • Demand should be attributed to the ultimate compute customer, including capacity supplied through intermediaries, without double counting.
  • The nonpayment clause describes a vulnerability, not a forecast that either company will default. It does not condition the present-tense concentration claim.
  • The statement about other customers is hedged. Evidence of another customer is relevant context, but does not by itself disprove the 50% share.

Counts as supported if: A consistent April inventory attributes approximately half of AI capacity under construction to OpenAI and Anthropic, with identifiable contractual exposure to those customers.

Counts as contradicted if: A comparable April inventory establishes a materially different combined capacity share. Evidence of other customers alone does not settle that share.

Retrospective: these criteria were written after the outcome was public.

Outcome: Unresolved

The record was checked, and the evidence available by the cutoff does not settle it.

Scored on a plain reading. The speaker named no measure for this claim, so it was judged on the reading an informed reader would take, stated below under our interpretation. Both reviews had to find that reading fair.

Rationale

The 50% share cannot be reproduced from a consistent April inventory. CoreWeave's announcement establishes demand from Meta, so outside customers should not be treated as nonexistent. That does not establish how much construction serves the two labs. The nonpayment language describes a possible vulnerability; it is not a default forecast requiring an antecedent to occur.

Limitations

  • Known contracts do not reveal the whole construction pipeline.
  • The hedged demand language and unquantified systemic-risk language cannot independently support a firm numerical verdict.

Evidence (1 item)

  • Context only: CoreWeave,

With this deal, the two companies are continuing their existing relationship, increasing support for Meta’s development and deployment of AI.

Why it matters here: Meta was an identified AI-compute customer outside OpenAI and Anthropic. This qualifies the broader suggestion that outside demand was unclear, but gives no comparable measurement of the two labs' construction-capacity share.

What would settle it

An April capacity inventory with ultimate-customer allocations, plus contract exposure and replacement-demand evidence for the risk assessment.
