Pundit ClaimsAI claims by Gary Marcus and Ed Zitron, with the evidence

“GPT-5 by itself won’t be a general purpose artificial general intelligence capable of taking on arbitrary tasks.”

What to Expect When You’re Expecting … GPT-5, paragraph 7.

Our reading:

GPT-5 by itself will not be a general-purpose AGI capable of arbitrary tasks.

We checked, and the evidence so far doesn’t settle it.

Judged on a plain reading. They named no measure, so we used the reading a typical informed reader would take. It is spelled out under “How we judged it”.

Why

A spatial evaluation published August 18, 2025, reported gaps between GPT-5 and human performance in mental reconstruction, perspective-taking, and other capabilities [e1]. The same study reported human-level performance in some categories [e2]. These findings show strengths and limitations within the tested spatial tasks [e1, e2]. They do not establish either persistent generalization failures across ordinary task families or broad, dependable competence using GPT-5 alone [e1, e2]. The general-purpose AGI claim remains unresolved on this evidence [e1, e2].

Caveats

  • Both evidence items come from the same spatial study, rather than independent evaluations across a broad range of task families [e1, e2].
  • The reported strengths and gaps do not establish whether they persist across other tasks and reasonable ways of eliciting the model's capabilities [e1, e2].

Evidence (2 items)

  • Supports the claim: Zhongang Cai and colleagues, arXiv,

    not yet achieved spatial intelligence.

Why it matters: The eight-benchmark study reports substantial gaps in several spatial capabilities. This supports the predicted limitation, but establishes performance under the study's protocols rather than a definitive classification of general intelligence.

Why it matters: The same evaluation finds substantial strengths, including human-level results in some categories. Its findings do not justify describing GPT-5 as uniformly incapable of spatial reasoning.

Conditions

  • by itself (their words)

Where we had to interpret

  • The ordinary reading is broad competence at unfamiliar, feasible tasks, rather than literal success at every conceivable task.
  • ‘By itself’ excludes external reasoning systems, specialist controllers and retrieval tools. Ordinary input and output interfaces are permitted.
  • The target is the original GPT-5 system, not every later model carrying a GPT-5 family name.
  • No deadline is supplied. Release is not treated as an unstated deadline.

Right if: Controlled evaluations establish substantial, persistent failures of generalization across ordinary task families in GPT-5 itself, after reasonable attempts to elicit its capabilities.

Wrong if: Controlled evaluations establish broad, dependable competence on unfamiliar tasks using GPT-5 alone, sufficient for the ordinary meaning of general-purpose intelligence.

We wrote this test after the outcome was known.

What would settle it

Reproducible evaluations of original GPT-5 alone across unfamiliar, feasible task families. They should vary reasonable prompting and reasoning budgets, include human comparisons, and establish either persistent generalization failures or broad, dependable competence. External reasoning systems, specialist controllers, and retrieval tools should be excluded.
