From the speaker
- And it’s on
- LLM-driven enshittification of the internet
- Since then I’ve been collecting examples
Our interpretation
- The ordinary reading is that LLM-generated junk and misinformation were already degrading parts of the internet. It does not require every website, or the internet on average, to have deteriorated.
- The surrounding account explicitly looks back to February 12 and describes examples collected since then. The target period therefore runs from February 12 through the post date, August 16, 2023.
- Degradation means publicly available material with substantive falsehoods, unedited generation artifacts, or substantial quality defects. AI authorship alone does not count.
Counts as supported if: Dated investigations document an emerging pattern of publicly available LLM-generated material with substantive falsehoods or substantial quality defects during the target period.
Counts as contradicted if: Reliable investigations establish that the alleged pattern rested on material that was not LLM-generated or did not have the claimed defects.
Retrospective: these criteria were written after the outcome was public.
Current assessment
Was it true for the period described?
Outcome: Supported
The dated evidence matches what the claim committed to, under the criteria frozen before grading.
Scored on a plain reading. The speaker named no measure for this claim, so it was judged on the reading an informed reader would take, stated below under our interpretation. Both reviews had to find that reading fair.

Rationale
Contemporary investigations documented numerous websites publishing unedited language-model output and specific false stories. That supports the ordinary claim that this form of degradation was already underway. It does not establish an internet-wide decline in average quality or validate every example in the post.
Limitations
- AI attribution was generally based on content evidence rather than access to generation records.
- NewsGuard's expanding discovery count is not a direct measure of production growth.
- The result depends on reading the statement as an emerging problem affecting parts of the internet.
Evidence (2 items)
Supports the claim: NewsGuard,
Some of the content advances false narratives.
Why it matters here: NewsGuard identified 49 apparently AI-generated sites using published chatbot artifacts and content inspection, including a fabricated report of President Biden's death. Its report also says most identified sites did not advance misinformation, and some operators disputed its characterization.

Supports the claim: NewsGuard,
false claims
Why it matters here: The follow-up identified 125 sites publishing largely AI-generated material without meaningful oversight or disclosure. The higher count establishes additional discoveries, although it does not independently measure the rate at which new sites were being created.
