Our interpretation
- The hedge '(or 7)' extends the forecast through the end of 2027. The latest day the deadline can mean is 2027-12-31.
- Plain reading: no AI system will be broadly accepted as AGI (generally human-level across a wide range of cognitive tasks) by the end of 2027. A single CEO's or lab's self-declaration does not count as broad acceptance on its own.
- Early resolution rule: the forecast is contradicted early only if, before the deadline, a system is broadly accepted as AGI, for example through formal independent verification (such as the expert panel in the Microsoft-OpenAI agreement) plus wide agreement among independent experts. Support cannot come before 2027-12-31.
Counts as supported if: By 2027-12-31, no AI system has been broadly accepted by independent experts as AGI.
Counts as contradicted if: Before 2028, a system is broadly accepted as AGI, for example confirmed by an independent verification process and widely acknowledged by independent researchers.
Prospective: these criteria were frozen before the deadline, while the outcome was not yet public.
Current assessment
Did the forecast come true?
Outcome: Unresolved
The record was checked, and the evidence available by the cutoff does not settle it.
Scored on a plain reading. The speaker named no measure for this claim, so it was judged on the reading an informed reader would take, stated below under our interpretation. Both reviews had to find that reading fair.

Rationale
Marcus forecast that AGI would not arrive in 2026 or 2027. Under the contract, the deadline is 2027-12-31, which is after the 2026-10-28 evaluation date. Support cannot be judged before then. The only cited item is an Arabian Post report from about late August 2026 (e1). It said none of OpenAI's announcements about its GPT-5.6 family, released in July, called GPT-5.6 or any other public model AGI. The same report notes that under the Microsoft-OpenAI arrangement, any AGI declaration by OpenAI must be verified by an independent expert panel. No item in the evidence shows a system broadly accepted as AGI, so the early-contradiction rule is not met on this record. The report is interim context and does not settle the forecast.
Limitations
- The evidence covers only OpenAI's statements up to about late August 2026. It does not cover other labs or later events.
- The evidence does not show whether any independent verification panel has met or ruled.
- The cited source is a secondary news site, and its publication date is approximate because the page shows no date.
- AGI has no agreed definition, so the final call will depend on what counts as broad acceptance.
Evidence (1 item)
Context only: Arabian Post,
None of those announcements characterised GPT-5.6 or another publicly available model as AGI.
Why it matters here: Interim context: as of about late summer 2026, OpenAI had not called any public model AGI. This is mid-horizon and cannot settle a forecast running to the end of 2027. The publication date is approximate; the page shows no date.

What would settle it
The position at 2027-12-31: whether any system was broadly accepted as AGI, for example confirmed by the Microsoft-OpenAI independent expert panel and widely acknowledged by independent researchers. If none was, the forecast is supported.
