Pundit ClaimsAI claims by Gary Marcus and Ed Zitron, with the evidence

“Indeed systems like GPT-3 are spectacular at memorization, but many onlookers recognize them for what they are, stochastic imitations of their input, with very little real coherence and very little comprehension.”

Learning Language is Harder Than You Think, paragraph 41. The full statement is at the source.

Our reading, the sentence that was checked:

Systems like GPT-3 are excellent at memorization but are stochastic imitations of their input with very little coherence or comprehension.

From the speaker

  • systems like GPT-3
  • spectacular at memorization
  • stochastic imitations of their input
  • very little real coherence
  • very little comprehension

Our interpretation

  • GPT-3 is the named target. Results for other model families provide context rather than direct measurements of GPT-3.
  • Memorization means reproducing learned training material, rather than merely knowing facts or using familiar words.
  • The ordinary behavioral reading of coherence is maintaining consistent, connected meaning across generated passages. Comprehension means correctly using the meaning of supplied language across varied tasks.
  • Very little is stronger than imperfect or less capable than humans. A few failures cannot establish it, and a few successes cannot refute it.
  • Statistical generation alone does not establish that outputs are merely copied or that comprehension is absent.
  • The target period is January 1 to July 20, 2022, the current research year through the post. Older evaluations are historical context unless evidence establishes their applicability during this period.

Counts as supported if: Direct evidence establishes strong GPT-3 memorization together with broadly slight sustained coherence and comprehension on varied, appropriately controlled tasks.

Counts as contradicted if: Representative evaluations establish substantial sustained coherence or comprehension beyond reproduction of training material, or directly undermine the claimed strength of memorization.

Retrospective: these criteria were written after the outcome was public.

Scored on a plain reading. The speaker named no measure for this claim, so it was judged on the reading an informed reader would take, stated below under our interpretation. Both reviews had to find that reading fair.

Rationale

The behavioral reading is checkable in principle, but the records found do not settle this compound characterization. The [GPT-3 paper](https://arxiv.org/html/2005.14165v4) documents real limitations alongside capabilities. [Scarecrow](https://aclanthology.org/2022.acl-long.501/) likewise finds both fluent output and measurable errors. The memorization study measures other model families. These findings do not justify converting imperfect coherence into very little comprehension, or treating statistical generation as proof of mere imitation.

Limitations

  • This is not a finding that GPT-3 understood language in a human-like way.
  • The selected historical evaluations are context, not decisive target-period outcome evidence.
  • A philosophical reading of real comprehension would require a separate definition before adjudication.

GPT-3 and our analysis of it have a number of limitations.

Why it matters here: The original documentation describes repetition, contradictions and declining coherence in long passages alongside strong overall text quality and task successes. It establishes limitations, but neither measures the claim's very-little threshold nor supplies a 2022 evaluation.

Modern neural language models can produce remarkably fluent and grammatical text.

Why it matters here: Scarecrow measures errors in generated text, including fourteen GPT-3 configurations, and finds both improvements and remaining gaps from human writing. Its fluency finding challenges an indiscriminate dismissal of the output, but does not equate fluency with comprehension; the study was initially public in 2021.

Why it matters here: This study directly demonstrates substantial memorization and scaling effects in the evaluated language models. Its GPT-Neo/GPT-J measurements cannot be transferred to GPT-3 or establish that GPT-3's other capabilities are only imitation.

What would settle it

Representative evaluations of identified GPT-3 versions from the target period, measuring training-text reproduction and sustained coherence and comprehension on controlled tasks, together with an explicit standard for what counts as very little.
