From the speaker

  • neurosymbolic AI community is growing fast
  • conferences that used to be dozens
  • are now thousands

Our interpretation

  • Read as: neurosymbolic AI events that once drew attendance in the dozens drew attendance in the thousands by about January 2023.
  • 'Now' means up to the post date, 2023-01-22. 'Used to be' means earlier editions of neurosymbolic meetings, such as the NeSy workshop series, which began in 2005.
  • Both ends need evidence: an earlier attendance in the dozens and a recent attendance in the thousands.

Counts as supported if: Attendance or registration figures show neurosymbolic meetings drawing dozens of people in earlier years and thousands by about January 2023.

Counts as contradicted if: Records show neurosymbolic meetings were already large in earlier years, or still drew only dozens or hundreds by January 2023.

Retrospective: these criteria were written after the outcome was public.

Was it true for the period described?

Outcome: Unresolved

The record was checked, and the evidence available by the cutoff does not settle it.

Scored on a plain reading. The speaker named no measure for this claim, so it was judged on the reading an informed reader would take, stated below under our interpretation. Both reviews had to find that reading fair.

Rationale

The claim says neurosymbolic conferences grew from dozens of attendees to thousands by January 2023. The 'now thousands' part has support. IBM reports that its neurosymbolic summer school, a virtual event held on 8–9 August 2022, had over 6,000 registrations and over 2,500 attendees (e1). The 'used to be dozens' part has no evidence. The packet contains no attendance figures for earlier neurosymbolic meetings, such as the NeSy workshops held since 2005. Without that baseline, the growth the claim describes cannot be checked. Nothing in the packet contradicts the claim. The evidence covers the recent figure only, not the earlier figure or the change between them.

Limitations

  • The only attendance figure comes from a single virtual IBM event, reported by IBM itself. It may not be comparable with in-person neurosymbolic workshops.
  • No attendance data was found for earlier neurosymbolic workshops, so the 'dozens' baseline is untested.
  • Marcus does not name the conferences he means, or say whether 'thousands' means registrations or attendees.

Evidence (1 item)

  • Supports the claim: IBM Research,

Over 6,000 people registered for the event and we had over 2,500 attendees.

Why it matters here: Shows that a neurosymbolic event drew thousands of people in August 2022, before the post. This backs the 'now thousands' part only. It says nothing about earlier attendance being in the dozens.

What would settle it

Attendance or registration counts for earlier neurosymbolic meetings (for example NeSy workshops from 2005 to 2021), from organizer reports or proceedings front matter, compared with 2022 to January 2023 figures for comparable events.
